News just in… After months of speculation, it’s been confirmed that one of the ‘greatest musicals of all time’, Wicked will fly in to Dublin’s Bord Gais Energy Theatre from November 27th 2013 until January 28th 2014!
Wicked, or to give it its full name, Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, is based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a parallel novel of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz and tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the North), who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace.
Popular musical numbers include Defying Gravity, What is this Feeling, Popular, No One Mourns the Wicked and For Good.
The original production premiered on Broadway in October 2003 and won three Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy for the cast album. The success has spawned several worldwide productions, including a long-running Laurence Olivier Award-winning West End production at the Apollo Theatre – which has been seen by over two million patrons.
Tickets for Wicked at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre go on sale on Friday, January 25th.
