DAILY UPDATE EXCLUSIVE: 98FM DJ BLOGS DETAILS OF TOP SECRET UNA HEALY / BEN FODEN WEDDING + PICTURE

No doubt 98FM DJ Darragh O’Dea is having a bit of an “ooopsy” moment today. Why you may ask? Well the popular radio personality had the privilege of being hired to DJ at the wedding of Saturday’s star Una Healy and rugby player Ben Foden in Tipperary on Saturday night. Obviously he was delighted and really enjoyed himself. So much so that he took to the 98FM website blog to share all the intimate details of the event, along with posting a picture of himself with the happy couple. Now ordinarily this wouldn’t be a faux pas. However when the couple are committed to a six figure contract with uber-celeb glossy OK! for the exclusive rights to their wedding photos and the intimate details of same, this becomes a huge deal.

OK! take these events seriously. Guests are not allowed to have cameras or phones on their persons and they hire security to ensure that no one gets a glimpse of the bride or groom until their exclusive feature on the nuptials is published. Despite this, Darragh somehow slipped through the security loop and having left the party with his job done at around 4am, he took to the blog a few hours later, to post his excitement at the events of the evening – and, of course, the picture of himself with the couple who both look tired but happy and, most importantly, are still wearing the wedding outfits that OK! went to such lengths to protect.

He also gave us many intimate details of the reception (which we would otherwise have had to wait until OK! came out to read) including this titbit:

“Of course Una was invited/pushed/forced to get up and sing a song and did a great version of ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. Ben also had to sing…..SEX ON FIRE!! I think it was a tie on who was better!!!! Support on the night came from The Saturdays!!!”

He also revealed that the groom was slightly nervous as he made his speech revealing:

“There was the traditional roar from the guests when he started to speak about his WIFE! It was a true story about love and about how boy meets girl, boy talks to girl for over an hour trying to pluck up the courage to ask girl out, boy drives 40 miles to see girl and as Ben’s father said, when you know you know! Boy falls for girl! As is common with wedding speeches, you have to thank the bridesmaids. But maybe the nerves were getting to Ben, as he thanked the girls from the Saturdays. He pretended he was Flo-Rida and tried to rap the opening part of ‘Higher’.”

However our favourite revelation has to be one about his song choices rather than the celeb guests.

“The only time I had to explain a song was when I played Mark McCabe – Maniac 2000. The Irish loved it, the english hadnt a clue!!! :) ” he wrote.

He removed the blog not long after it went live (not before it was copied, obviously) – we don’t know if OK! magazine got to him or if he simply realised that blabbing all the behind the scenes gossip from a celeb wedding probably wasn’t the best way to get hired again (and after all Marvin and Rochelle will be looking for a DJ soon). All the spelling and punctuation mistakes contained in it are his, not ours, by the way. But if you want to check out what he said here’s his blog entry in full. The picture above features Darragh with the happy couple!

THE BLOG

“How did I spend my Saturday night? Well in all the years that I have been a DJ, one of favourite things is DJing at weddings.

Last night, I was in Kilshane house in Tipperary to DJ at the wedding of The Saturdays singer, Una Healy and professional rugby player Ben Foden. The other members of the band acted as bridesmaids. I have to say that in person, the girls looked stunning and a lot smaller than when you see them on television.

From what I can remember of the speeches, Una’s father delivered a heartfelt and funny recollection of his daughter growing up from her love of swimning to dancing to Michael Jackson songs before heading off to London to audition for a girl band.

Ben’s speech was equally great. There was the traditional roar from the guests when he started to speak about his WIFE! It was a true story about love and about how boy meets girl, boy talks to girl from over an hour trying to pluck up the courage to ask girl out, boy drives 40 miles to see girl and as Ben’s father said, when you know you know! Boy falls for girl! As is common with wedding speeches, you have to thank the bridesmaids. But maybe the nerves were getting to Ben, as he thanked the girls from the Saturdays. He pretended he was Flo-Rida and tried to rap the opening part of ‘Higher”

The priest who married the couple had the last word, he asked Ben and Una to stand up and stand back to back and simply said may this be the last time you turn your back on each other!! It was truly beautiful.

The couple had their first dance before moving outside for a fireworks display. Una’s uncle, Irish music legend Declan Nerney provided the entertainment as well as northern band the mindbenders. “Of course Una was invited/pushed/forced to get up and sing a song. and did a great version of ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. Ben also had to sing…..SEX ON FIRE!! I think it was a tie on who was better!!!! Support on the night came from The Saturdays!!!”

If I thought that there was a true love story between Ben and Una, there was another great love story as Marvin  from JLS, and Saturdays girl Rochelle looked totally smitten with each other! Just in case there was any doubt, Marvin is a very down to earth guy who I had a good chat with and music, they kind of system I was playing and his love for Jay Z/Kanye West ‘s N***ga’s in Paris. We played that one more than once, expecially when he wanted to get on the mic, only to be dragged away by the boss!! :)

Here we go with LMFAO, Rihanna, JLS (Marvin is dragged on to the dance floor), Jennifer Lopez, 3 Saturdays songs, and loads more that I cant just remember right now! I played a little bit for everyone. Loads of great tunes, some old school RnB, 90s dance, 90s cheese. A fantastic reaction from Spice Girls, Five, Westlife, Britney Spears and a final Saturdays song! The only time I had to explain a song was when I played Mark McCabe – Maniac 2000. The Irish loved it, the english hadnt a clue!!! :)

Final song of the night with everyone on the dancefloor Lionel Ritchie – All night long

Overall it was a fantastic night, great crowd that were really up for it. I left around 4am, and it was still in full swing! Before I left, I managed to get a picture with the newly married couple.

I suppose I have to give myself a shameless plug so If you ever need a DJ for your wedding, drop me a mail to 98FM darragh.odea@98fm.com
