CALL OF THE WILD

Taming unruly curls with top hair stylist Paul Hession

The heat and humidity, just as much as wind and rain, can prove treacherous when trying to keep wild and unruly curly hair under control. Personally, I’m a fan of letting curls roam free but I understand the desire to tame them. With this in mind, I’ve put together my top tips to enhance your beautiful curls when our weather decides to wreak havoc with those luscious locks.

Kerastase Oleo Relax Shampoo, €19

All hair needs moisture but this is especially true of wild or curly hair. It’s important to make sure you tailor your haircare regime as you would your skin at different times of the year. When washing your mane, use good quality products such as Kerastase Oleo Relax shampoo, €19, and masque, €35.30, created especially to smooth and discipline unmanageable frizzy hair. Next, gently towel-dry hair, using a small amount of serum with anti-frizz protection on the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the roots! A hairdryer can be used to give a quick, drying blast here, leaving your hair damp before applying any more product.

Ideally we want to define and soften curls and waves and I always recommend using products specifically designed to do this. I’m a big fan of L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni Art Hair Mix Glam Wave, €17.85, a nutritive mousse for dry and curly hair. It provides a simple solution to treating and styling curly hair in one swoop.

Wella Shockwaves Heat Defence Volumizing Mousse, €3.90

Alternatively, Wella Shockwaves Heat Defence Volumizing Mousse, €3.90, is a product that you can build up gradually on either wet or dry hair to eliminate frizz.

Moroccan Oil, €38, is regarded as a hero product among those with unruly hair and many of our clients swear by it! It can be continually reapplied without making the hair feel lank and greasy. A revolutionary styling, finishing and conditioning product, it is instantly absorbed and helps eliminate frizz, easily detangles and provides long term conditioning for added bounce. It also acts as a protector when blow-drying and straightening the hair so it’s a good investment for any curly crop. The Moroccan Oil product range is priced from €18 to €81.

Top Tip of the Week: Use good quality products and keep your hair well conditioned.
